HELPING VICTIMS

VICTIM WITNESS DIVISION

Our Victim Witness Division offers specialized assistance to crime victims of misdemeanor and felony offenses throughout the court process. Coordinators provide information, resources and referrals to appropriate service agencies in our community to assist crime victims during the aftermath of the crime.

The Code of Criminal Procedure, Chapter 56 designates specific rights for victims of crime. Our Victim Assistance Division is devoted in the fight to honor those rights.

As Victim Assistance Coordinators, we are in partnership with the prosecution team. We educate the victims about the judicial process and procedures which include courtroom accompaniment, case status, court proceedings, and assist victims in preparing for trial. We consider it not a duty, but a privilege to assist victims of crime. It is their rights we hold dear and carry as a sword to ensure victims are heard.

To contact a Victim Assistance Coordinator, please call the Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office at 936-539-7800.

SUMI, THE DA DOG:

Helping Victims Find Their Words

Sumi works on a specially trained team with her partner Pam Traylor, a criminal justice professional Victim’s Assistance Coordinator with the DA’s office. Sumi has a very important job as a Courthouse Facility Dog. Her role is to comfort victims as they enter the criminal justice system. She also attends court dockets, participates in victim interviews, and if needed, will accompany victims, especially children, when they testify in court. When Pam interviews with victims about abuse and other crimes, Sumi is there to provide unconditional acceptance and love. The criminal justice process is an obviously frightening, stressful time for a child or even an adult victim. Having a soft, sympathetic, calming presence comforts victims throughout the process. Sumi can sit with them during the trial and the children can hold onto her leash when they are on the witness stand, allowing them to feel less alone. We have found that with Sumi, our victims are able to feel more comfortable speaking about the abuse that has been perpetrated against them.
